One of the best scene-stealers on General Hospital is Gary James Fuller who plays the young James West on the ABC daytime drama series. In all of his scenes, Fuller can step it up with some of the vets, and he most certainly holds his own in scenes with the likes of: Josh Kelly (Cody), Ryan Paevey (Nathan), Kirsten Storms (Maxie) and more.

Gary is this week’s special guest on the Steve Burton (Jason) and Bradford Anderson’s (Spinelli) That’s Awesome podcast, and we have to say Fuller was delightful and informative of how its been for him to live in Las Vegas, Nevada, shoot episodes of GH in Los Angeles and then head back home and do that several times this year already.

GH fans first saw Gary as James back in 2023. Fuller opened up about the audition process and what happened when he landed the role of James. In an interesting twist, he actually auditioned for another GH role, first!

“I had an audition for the part of Wiley and I didn’t get that part,” shared Fuller. “But then, two years later, I got the audition for the part of James. I obviously got that before we even left the parking lot! My agent told me that I booked it, and that’s when I met Frank Valentini (executive producer, GH) and Kirsten Storms (Maxie, GH).”

Speaking on how he learns his lines with his mom, James shares, “We’d practice them like a week before (tape day). Then, once we leave to go to the hotel, we practice them in the hotel, and then I’d have them memorized. then we’d just drive over there (to the set).  Since his time on GH, Gary mentioned it was the, “falling into the lake scenes that were hard. I’ve never been underwater with normal clothes on,” he explained. In the scene, it was Cody to the rescue who dove in and saved James’ life deepening their bond and friendship.

Bradford Anderson was curious at what Fuller’s favorite moment was thus far during his run on GH, to which he replied, “When I first started and in my very first episode, it was when we did the (GH) Nurses’ Bowl 2023. That was one of my favorites, because we disappeared (during the magic trick) and then we didn’t come back, and then no one was in the box! We made water disappear, and we made our grandma disappear.”

In a turnabout, Gary had a question for Bradford, “What do you think Spinelli feels like now that Nathan is back? I think Spinelli is very jealous. I see the jealousy in the scene when I (as James) meet Nathan (for the first time).

Anderson answered: “It’s multi-pronged. It’s not only that I’m worried that James is not going be in my life as much. I’m worried that when mom (Maxie) wakes up she will want her (now alive) husband back, and I wanted to be her husband. Spinelli wants his little family to stay together with James, Georgie and Bailey Lou, too.”
